“London-based book publisher and author Piatkus details the ups and downs of her 28 years at the helm of Piatkus Books in this chatty memoir. Along with matter-of-factness about how this woman-owned company grew and excelled, Piatkus quietly shares the more emotional aspects of her life, such as coping with her daughter’s cerebral palsy diagnosis, her divorce, business stumbles, and more. There’s much to admire in this bootstrapping account: Piatkus starting the company in her home before eventually buying an office building in downtown London. Her clarity of purpose (“I wanted to publish good books and sell as many of them as possible for as long as we could”). Her treatment of her colleagues, which morphed into a very familial culture. And the authors who chose Piatkus as their house—Danielle Steel, VC Andrews, Nora Roberts, and on and on. Lots of industry gossip, some decent explanations of book trends and implications, and, at the end, no regrets about the 2007 sale to Hachette. Much to learn from an early serial entrepreneur.”
